Gorgeous Kiln Fused Glass on driftwood plinth

This piece was made for an exhibition called ‘Glimpse’.  And it was in response to the 2014 Folkestone Triennial theme of ‘Lookout’.  So obviously, it’s eyes watching, but as I was going to be showing the piece in Folkestone (where I was born and brought up) I wanted it to have a strong seaside context.  So the eyes are on a three levels – a sandy/rocky coloured one, then blue sea, then a ‘horizon’ where sea becomes sky.  And the piece is taller than it is wide, like a watchtower.  I think the eyes are quite benevolent, they’re looking out for you. I’d had this wood for some years, waiting for the right piece to marry with it.  And then ‘Watch Tower’ came along, and it was perfect, evocative of a boat.  So it all came together.

Glass 16w x 31h, wood 107w x 12d x 5h
